So much for global warming! With snow on the ground since mid-December, this winter has been a real stinker. Please tell us of your concerns and experiences regarding the school's winter procedures.
Following up on a recent enquiry regarding delayed/cancelled school buses, I have the following info from the school. Firstly - when the school receives notification of delays or cancellations to scheduled school bus timings all possible action will be taken to get the news out to the information points, the messaging service and Moray Firth Radio. However, this is very much depends on the bus company notifying the school in time and, unfortunately, this has not always been the case.
Secondly - there is clear guidance for parents and pupils about how long they should wait for transport if it does not turn up. This is provided in the school prospectus and in the adverse weather information letter which is issued annually (October) to all families who travel on school transport ( a copy of which is included as an appendix in the prospectus). This information is also on the school website and on the Highland Council website. This clearly states that:
‘Parents should advise their children on how long they should wait at the pick up point for their transport. This will depend on the prevailing weather conditions and the availability of shelter at the pick-up point. During adverse weather conditions no pupil is expected to wait longer than 20 minutes past the normal ‘pick up’ time’.
Finally - the concern about not informing parents of a pupil’s no arrival to school when a bus does not run is slightly different and one the school has considered before. In the past when a message was put out stating that pupils had not arrived the school got complaints from parents who stated that it was obvious why the pupil was not in school. Some were upset that they had to stop driving, interrupt a meeting or whatever to read a text message. Consequently, the school works on the assumption that it is reasonable to expect that children communicate with their parents in the event of transport not arriving.
Great to see the new/updated website going - looks good. If school closes due adverse weather would it be possible to announce on school website? Thanks just a thought.
